In a significant policy shift, the United States has declared tariffs as high as 100% on certain drone imports and components, highlighting national security concerns and the desire to lessen dependency on foreign supply chains, primarily those led by China. This new tariff structure specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, especially larger drones weighing more than 25 kilograms and those equipped with sensitive capabilities like thermal cameras and docking stations. While these larger drones will encounter a 100% tariff, smaller drones are set to face a 25% tariff.
Furthermore, the US will extend tariffs to drones and related components from a number of major trading partners. Products from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subjected to a 15% tariff, whereas imports from the United Kingdom will incur a 10% tariff. These tariffs will apply only if the hardware, software, and technology originate from the specified countries or the US itself. Most of these new tariffs are slated to come into effect on September 3.
The White House has articulated that these measures aim to bolster the US defense and industrial base, promote domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country, all while reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. China currently holds a leading position in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI capturing a substantial share of the US commercial drone sector. DJI and other Chinese firms have previously faced US restrictions due to national security worries.
US officials have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could present risks related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these threats. The decision to impose these tariffs comes amidst ongoing trade and technological tensions between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has introduced its own restrictions affecting drone exports to the US and has taken action against several American companies.
