Taiwan is set to enhance its air defense capabilities by constructing 26 additional hardened aircraft shelters to accommodate an increasing number of F-16V fighter jets. With the delivery of 66 new F-16V Block 70 jets from the United States, the total number of these advanced aircraft stationed on Taiwan’s east coast is anticipated to reach between 110 and 120. These new aircraft will be based at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, alongside the F-16V Block 20 models already operating from Hualien County.
To ensure the security of this expanding fleet, Taiwan’s air force has earmarked over NT$6.88 billion for the construction of new shelters between 2027 and 2031 in Hualien and Taitung. The plan includes building 22 shelters in Hualien and four in Taitung, along with five general aircraft hangars and additional supporting facilities at Hualien to accommodate transport aircraft. Initial project management and design work will commence in 2027, with detailed design and contracting following in 2028 and 2029. Construction is slated to begin in 2030, with a completion target set for 2031.
The strategic initiative aims to implement a “one aircraft, one shelter” approach to bolster the survivability of Taiwan’s fighter fleet during potential military conflicts. By dispersing aircraft to protected facilities in Hualien and Taitung, Taiwan seeks to preserve its combat capabilities and maintain its interception, suppression, and homeland defense missions. The new shelters are designed to offer enhanced protection against explosive attacks, ensuring that more fighter jets remain operational in the event of a sudden assault.
In light of these developments, President William Lai has called on military officers to adapt to the rapid advancements in technology and the evolving global security landscape. He highlighted the importance of strengthening joint operations, developing asymmetric capabilities, and focusing on future defense planning. President Lai also emphasized the role of artificial intelligence as a supportive tool in these efforts.
Furthermore, President Lai underscored the necessity of maintaining military readiness and continuing investment in national defense. He asserted that bolstered defense capabilities are crucial for preserving peace and safeguarding Taiwan’s sovereignty, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring the nation’s security amidst an increasingly complex global environment.
