The newly inaugurated Shengji Tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion, particularly between Zhongxiao East Road and the National Biotechnology Research Park in Nangang District. The NT$1.878 billion project aims to streamline traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road, providing a faster link to Sijhih District in New Taipei City.

The tunnel spans approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter section running underground. Commuters traveling between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station can now expect their travel times during peak hours to decrease from 15-20 minutes to less than 10 minutes.

Aside from improving daily commutes, the Shengji Tunnel offers an alternative route during flooding or emergencies on Academia Road, enhancing the area’s transportation resilience. The infrastructure also includes a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting safer and more sustainable travel options.

Since its opening in 2018, the National Biotechnology Research Park has attracted over 2,600 researchers and professionals, contributing significantly to the growth of biomedical research and biotechnology activities in the Nangang area. The new tunnel is expected to further support this burgeoning sector by improving accessibility and connectivity.
