Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño has strongly criticized China’s imposition of sanctions against Belizean Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca, labeling the actions as unjustified and illegal. The sanctions were announced after Fonseca attended an event in Taipei celebrating Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day. Despite Beijing’s measures, Briceño asserted that Belize remains steadfast in its support for Taiwan.

Speaking at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, Briceño emphasized Belize’s sovereignty in determining its foreign policy. He reiterated that the sanctions would not deter Belize from maintaining its diplomatic relations with Taiwan, underscoring the country’s commitment to supporting Taipei despite pressures from China.

The sanctions imposed by China include freezing any assets that Fonseca may hold in China, banning Chinese individuals and organizations from engaging in business or cooperation with him, and denying him entry into mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. These measures were also extended to Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication Technologies Gustavo Villate, who attended the same event in Taipei.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any formal international recognition or engagement with the island. However, Belize continues to recognize Taiwan diplomatically, placing it among the few countries that maintain formal ties with Taipei amidst China’s growing influence.

This development highlights the ongoing diplomatic tensions surrounding Taiwan’s international status and the challenges faced by countries like Belize that choose to uphold formal relations with the island. Despite the sanctions, Belize appears determined to sustain its alliance with Taiwan, illustrating its defiance against external pressures to alter its foreign policy stance.
