The city has initiated precautionary evacuations in several mountainous regions, including the Wulai District, where the risk of landslides is alarmingly high. Mayor Hou You-yi has mandated that these evacuations be completed by 6 p.m., emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Weather forecasts indicate that more than 500 millimeters of rain could fall in the mountainous areas and along the northern coast of New Taipei through Saturday. This heavy rainfall increases the likelihood of landslides, prompting authorities to place additional districts—Sanxia, Pinglin, Shiding, Xindian, Xizhi, and Shenkeng—under landslide alerts as well.
As of Thursday afternoon, Typhoon Bavi was positioned approximately 650 kilometers east of Taiwan’s southern tip. The storm is carrying maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour, posing a significant threat to the region. The intensity of the winds and the expected heavy rainfall have made swift evacuations crucial in preventing potential disasters.
