Taiwan and the United States are intensifying their defense industry cooperation, driven by escalating security concerns that necessitate greater investment and deeper integration of their supply chains. This development was underscored at the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum in Taipei, where retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan for its significant strides in boosting defense spending, modernizing its military forces, and embracing advanced technologies. Flynn highlighted that Taiwan’s enhanced investment reflects a robust commitment to safeguarding its security and maintaining sovereignty.
The forum witnessed an unprecedented turnout from the US side, with 41 representatives from American defense firms, signaling a growing interest in Taiwan’s defense market. This increasing participation underscores the expanding business prospects and the urgency posed by regional security dynamics. According to Flynn, the presence of so many US companies highlights both the opportunities and the necessity brought about by the current geopolitical climate.
James Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, emphasized that the bilateral relationship is transitioning from traditional arms sales towards a more comprehensive strategic industrial partnership. He pointed out that Taiwan’s expertise in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems is well-suited for defense applications, including drones, AI-enabled systems, and secure communication technologies. Taiwan’s manufacturing and system integration skills align well with advanced US defense technologies, paving the way for substantial collaborative ventures.
Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council, noted that the cooperation is designed to meet Taiwan’s defense requirements while also bolstering global supply chains. He described the synergy between US defense innovation and Taiwan’s technology industry as a solid base for developing a competitive defense ecosystem. This partnership not only caters to regional defense needs but also strengthens global technological cooperation and supply chain resilience.
In addition to its collaboration with the United States, Taiwan has been engaging with European partners. Earlier this month, representatives from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic visited Taiwan to explore defense technology cooperation and future reconstruction opportunities. Discussions included potential collaborations in the drone and information technology sectors, reflecting a broader strategy to enhance defense supply chain robustness and respond to shifting geopolitical challenges.
