China is set to widen its import portfolio during its 15th Five-Year Plan from 2026 to 2030, focusing on advanced technology, key industrial components, energy resources, and top-tier agricultural products. This strategic move, announced by the General Administration of Customs, aims to modernize the country’s industrial base, enhance domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a broader selection of quality goods from international markets.

Officials have highlighted that the initiative not only targets industrial modernization but also seeks to diversify the range of countries from which China sources its imports. This comes in response to the significant growth in China’s import and export activities, which both saw double-digit increases in the first half of the year. Notably, the growth in imports exceeded that of exports, driven by heightened domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer products.

As part of its efforts to facilitate greater market access, China will continue to welcome overseas agricultural and food products, simplifying quarantine and import procedures. Since the beginning of the year, China has approved market access for 264 categories of agricultural and food items from 79 new countries, expanding its food sourcing network to over 150 countries and regions.

Experts in China view this approach as a clear indication of the country’s dedication to opening its markets further, diversifying trade relationships, and reinforcing global economic cooperation. By boosting imports, China aims to satisfy the growing demand for industrial upgrades and premium consumer goods, simultaneously creating new prospects for international exporters.

Chinese authorities anticipate that the rising domestic consumer market will provide substantial opportunities for global businesses as domestic consumption continues its upward trajectory. This expansion reflects a strategic shift towards fostering stronger ties with international markets, ensuring that China’s economic landscape remains robust and dynamic.
