The US House of Representatives has approved an appropriations bill for the upcoming fiscal year that notably includes US$500 million in Foreign Military Financing for Taiwan. This legislation, which passed by a narrow margin of 217-209, also emphasizes Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations. The bill outlines discretionary funding of US$47.32 billion, marking a decrease from the current fiscal year’s budget as per the administration’s spending priorities.
Despite the overall reduction in the budget, the bill maintains strong support for key US allies such as Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. It underscores the strategic focus on countering challenges from nations like China and Iran, as well as other adversarial entities. A significant directive within the bill instructs the US Secretary of State, in collaboration with the Defense Secretary, to prioritize the supply of defense equipment and services to Taiwan.
Additionally, the bill allocates a minimum of US$4 million for the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, a program managed through the American Institute in Taiwan. This initiative underscores the continued US commitment to fostering international partnerships and capacity building with Taiwan.
The legislation also contains a provision prohibiting the use of funds to create or present maps that inaccurately depict Taiwan’s territorial boundaries or its governing system. This measure reflects a broader commitment to accurately representing Taiwan’s status on the global stage.
For the appropriations bill to become law, it must still gain approval from the US Senate before proceeding to the president for final authorization. This process is essential to ensure the continued alignment of US foreign policy and defense priorities with legislative support.
