President William Lai has announced Taiwan’s plans to enhance its influence in promoting sustainable development throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability in Taipei, Lai emphasized the country’s utilization of its strengths in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation. The forum, which draws participation from businesses and organizations across Asia, spotlights crucial areas such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living.
Lai underscored resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity as the core components of Taiwan’s sustainable development strategy. The government is committed to boosting urban resilience, strengthening energy security, expanding renewable energy options, and improving power grid and energy storage capacities. As part of its comprehensive carbon reduction plan, Taiwan has initiated the collection of carbon fee payments to support emissions reduction initiatives.
In an effort to assist businesses in transitioning to digitalization and achieving net-zero operations, Taiwan’s government plans to establish a NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This initiative will be complemented by additional support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through a diversified development program. The goal is to ensure that businesses can navigate the shift towards more sustainable practices effectively.
