The humanoid robotics sector is on the brink of a significant transformation, driven by rapid advancements in embodied intelligence, particularly from Chinese companies. This surge in innovation was recently highlighted at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where Chinese-developed robots showcased remarkable abilities across various sports disciplines. Notably, some of these robots outperformed existing human records, including the 100-meter sprint record held by Usain Bolt at 9.58 seconds, and the 400-meter record set by Wayde van Niekerk at 43.03 seconds.

This swift progress has heightened the competitive landscape among Chinese robotics firms and professionals eager to lead in this burgeoning field. It also prompts a crucial question: Has the humanoid robotics industry reached a milestone similar to the “iPhone moment”? This concept, introduced in the AI domain by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023, describes a pivotal technological breakthrough that propels an innovation from an emerging idea to widespread adoption, significantly impacting industries and altering user experiences.

Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, one of China’s prominent humanoid robot manufacturers, provided a measured perspective on the timeline for reaching such a breakthrough in embodied intelligence. Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang suggested that the industry might experience a tipping point akin to the ChatGPT phenomenon within two to three years. However, he cautioned that under a slower development pace, it could take between five to ten years to achieve this milestone.

Wang’s remarks came shortly after an important milestone for his company, Unitree Robotics, which debuted on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market. On its first day, the company’s shares witnessed a substantial increase, closing 460 percent higher. This event underscores the growing confidence and interest in the potential of humanoid robotics, as investors and industry leaders closely watch the developments that could reshape the future of this technology.
