Taiwan is advancing its air defense capabilities with the development of the Chiang Kung missile, a high-altitude interceptor crucial to the nation’s proposed “T-Dome” integrated air defense network. Officially known as Tien Chien IV, this missile is engineered to target and neutralize ballistic missiles at elevations reaching up to 70 kilometers. The Chiang Kung employs a land-based vertical launch system and is powered by a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, enhanced with vectored thrust to boost maneuverability in high-altitude engagements.
The National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) disclosed that the missile is equipped with radar capable of identifying diverse targets and engaging multiple tactical ballistic missiles, even when subjected to electronic warfare threats. Its design includes a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, which is adept at operating in conditions affected by electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming.
This new missile will fill a critical gap in Taiwan’s defense, offering a high-altitude interception capability that the country currently lacks. It is intended to work in tandem with existing air-defense systems as part of the comprehensive T-Dome network. However, the development of the Chiang Kung faces financial hurdles, as it was not included in Taiwan’s special defense budget.
To address this funding shortfall, the Ministry of National Defense is seeking financial support through a supplementary budget. Officials have expressed concerns that delays in securing the necessary budget could hinder the acquisition timeline and impede the broader progress of the T-Dome air defense initiative.
