At the third Taiwan-Europe Chip Innovation Forum in Antwerp, Belgium, Taiwan showcased its prowess in semiconductors along with its broader technological capabilities. The two-day event saw participation from representatives of four Taiwanese research institutions, who highlighted their expertise in semiconductor research, high-performance computing, and the development of earthquake-resistant technologies critical for chip production.
Jointly organized by Taiwan’s semiconductor research institute and the Belgium-based research organization imec, the forum focused on advanced technologies and research. Discussions also centered on talent development and enhancing cooperation between Taiwan and Europe. Taiwan is keen to extend its semiconductor collaboration with Europe beyond the usual manufacturing and design partnerships, aiming for more comprehensive cooperation across the entire technology ecosystem.
Taiwanese officials emphasized that Europe’s strengths in basic science and research are a perfect complement to Taiwan’s capabilities in rapid manufacturing and commercialization. This synergy could pave the way for cross-border research and development projects that involve universities and industries from both regions. The potential for enhanced collaboration could lead to significant advancements in the semiconductor industry.
An important aspect of the forum was talent development, with Taiwan’s scholarship programs already having brought over 500 European students to the island to study semiconductor manufacturing. Such educational initiatives are seen as crucial for strengthening long-term academic and industrial ties between Taiwan and Europe, suggesting that expanded education programs could further solidify these connections.
