Taipei is set to embark on a significant educational transformation with the announcement of a comprehensive four-year initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into its classrooms. Spearheaded by Mayor Chiang Wan-an, this ambitious project is backed by a substantial investment of NT$9.2 billion (US$288 million) and seeks to prepare students for a future where AI plays a pivotal role. The initiative will introduce cutting-edge technologies and teaching methodologies that align with the rising prominence of AI in various sectors.
A cornerstone of this initiative is the installation of smart screens in every classroom throughout the city, enhancing the learning environment with advanced digital capabilities. Furthermore, the project plans to upgrade existing digital learning platforms by integrating AI-powered assistants, which will aid both students and teachers in the educational process. Additionally, an AI Education Center will be established at Beitou Shilin Technology Park, serving as a hub for teacher training, curriculum development, and fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industry stakeholders.
To further enrich the classroom experience, the city plans to incorporate more robotics, drones, and AI-enabled technologies into its educational offerings. This initiative will also expand opportunities for students to engage with edge computing systems, which are equipped with powerful graphics processing units (GPUs), thereby providing hands-on experience with technology that is at the forefront of innovation.
Beyond equipping students with technical skills, the initiative places a strong emphasis on responsible technology use, digital literacy, and data privacy. These elements are crucial in ensuring that students not only become proficient in AI but also understand the ethical implications of its use. The revamped learning platform is designed to facilitate independent learning for students and alleviate some of the administrative burdens on teachers, such as exam grading, allowing educators to focus more on interactive teaching.
