Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea remains operational despite an order from the Papua New Guinea government to close it down, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. The office, led by Taiwanese representative Chiu Chen-yu, has continued its activities without significant disruption, maintaining regular communication with Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs.
In July, Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko announced the government’s decision to close Taiwan’s representative office. However, Taiwan claims it was not consulted prior to this decision and has formally opposed the move. The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry has expressed its intention to keep the office open by preparing responses to various developments and pursuing dialogue with Papua New Guinea’s authorities.
Taiwan is also seeking support from other nations to facilitate discussions aimed at keeping the office operational. The ministry emphasizes its commitment to pursuing diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue and continue its presence in Papua New Guinea.
