Xi noted that the growing influence of the Global South is instigating significant shifts in global power dynamics, a change he described as irreversible.
Xi advocated for the principles of sovereign equality, mutual respect, and multilateralism, suggesting that dialogue and consultation should underpin international relations. He called for equal rights, opportunities, and rules for all nations, irrespective of their size, power, or wealth. Additionally, he urged major world powers to adhere to international norms and the rule of law, stressing the importance of respecting these guidelines.
Highlighting the United Nations’ role, Xi called for its strengthening and for more inclusive participation in handling international issues. He underscored the necessity for countries to prioritize development, maintain openness, and foster cooperation. Moreover, Xi pointed out the significance of bridging digital and artificial intelligence divides to ensure that technological advancements benefit a broader array of countries.
Xi also pointed to the SCO’s 25-year history as a testament to successful cooperation among nations with varying political systems, cultures, and development levels. He proposed enhancing the SCO Plus partnerships and promoting greater collaboration across Asia and Europe, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative. According to Xi, this initiative exemplifies high-quality cooperative efforts that can serve as a model for international relations.
The Chinese president’s remarks come a year after he introduced the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin. According to China, this initiative has garnered support from numerous countries and international organizations since its proposal, underscoring a growing consensus on the need for a more inclusive and multipolar global framework.
