Taiwan’s envoy to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the crucial role of U.S. arms sales in bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities, as the island faces mounting military pressure from China. He highlighted Taiwan’s proactive steps in increasing defense expenditures and enhancing its readiness to counter potential security threats. Yui emphasized the necessity for Taiwan to rely on its own defense investments, rather than depending solely on international support.
A significant U.S. weapons package valued at $14 billion for Taiwan is currently under review by the U.S. administration. This proposal has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers who regard Taiwan’s defense needs as increasingly pressing due to China’s expanding military presence in the region. Yui pointed out the need for military support proportional to the threats faced, citing frequent Chinese military drills and the deployment of warships and aircraft near Taiwan.
Yui reiterated Taiwan’s objective of safeguarding its security and democratic values through defensive measures. He stressed that the military support Taiwan receives should be commensurate with the level of threat it confronts, referencing the ongoing military activities by China in proximity to the island.
U.S. officials have affirmed that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, with a continued commitment to Taiwan’s security as a vital aspect of U.S.-Taiwan relations. Despite the persistent regional tensions, Taiwan remains confident in its enduring partnership with the United States.
