China and Germany are enhancing their collaborative efforts in business and technology, with a notable shift in expertise and innovation now occurring in both directions. This development was highlighted in a new joint research report unveiled in Beijing, suggesting a more balanced exchange rather than the traditional flow from Germany to China.

The report was released at the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026, held in Beijing’s Shunyi district. The event gathered over 400 executives and business representatives from Europe and China, underscoring the increasing interest in mutual cooperation. A significant finding from the research indicates that a considerable number of European companies are keen to expand their footprint in China. Specifically, 38 percent of surveyed European firms expressed their intention to boost research and development investments in China, while 40 percent are considering granting their Chinese branches more operational autonomy from their German headquarters.

Meanwhile, the collaboration is reciprocated by Chinese companies, with major electric vehicle manufacturers like Li Auto and NIO establishing research and design centers in Germany. This move signifies a deepening of technological ties between the two nations, reflecting a robust two-way flow of innovation.

In addition to these findings, the forum also saw the inauguration of a public service station aimed at assisting businesses in overcoming technical trade barriers. A new partnership initiative was launched to encourage greater participation from German and European companies in Beijing’s economic and technological cooperation zone located in Shunyi.

Beijing, with a vision to bolster this burgeoning partnership, plans to further support collaboration between Chinese and German enterprises. Tang Wenhong emphasized the city’s commitment to attracting more innovative companies, thereby solidifying Beijing’s status as a global hub for science and technology.
